At the moment an extensive guide about configuration can be found in the game forum: Beginners Guide to Advanced Settings

Sometimes your hero cannot perform any configured action. E.g. if he loses his sword or if he does not have enough mana left.

Therefore the option "perform alternative action" is important and should be configured:

if disabled your hero will do nothing but wait
if enabled your hero could perform a skill that is potentially useful (depends on the automatic selection). The auto select function relies just on attack skills but it also depends on your heroe's items and mana.
